Dear Hiker,
Our shorter hikes continue to be popular – 67 people
hiked with us yesterday! We purposely design three of our monthly hikes
(February, March, and August) to be relatively short and easy. While most
enjoy the longer hikes, we like to offer some hikes that are less strenuous in
order to accommodate other hikers.
Please meet “Dave & Bill Hikes” on Saturday,
April 10, for a hike at the McCormick addition to Sugarloaf Ridge
State Park. The
entrance to McCormick is through Hood
Mountain Regional
Park, located at the end
of Los Alamos Road,
off of Highway 12. Meet us at 9:45 AM for a prompt 10 AM departure, at
the second gate of the access road. This 11 mile strenuous hike
requires climbing a total of 2300 feet in elevation and will last approximately
6 hours. We will visit “Grandmother Oak”, the largest Coast
Live Oak in Sonoma
County. The
wildflowers are in bloom. Plan to wear layered clothing, and bring a
lunch and ample liquids. We hike rain or shine, and don’t forget
there is a vehicle charge to enter the park.
We encourage you to carpool if possible. As our group
continues to grow, parking can be a problem on occasion. Anyone wishing
to carpool can meet at the St. Francis (Safeway) shopping center in Santa Rosa for a prompt
9:15 AM departure. The meeting place is in the corner of the parking lot
nearest the Calistoga Road
and Highway 12 intersection. This is a “leaderless” carpool
meeting place i.e. it’s up to those who are there to organize the
carpool.
As always, we'll bring a cooler filled with potables to
facilitate "tailgate socializing" in the parking lot after the hike.
Please call Dave at 539-8847 or me for further information,
or you can access the "Dave & Bill Hikes" web page directly (add
it to your “Favorites” list for fast and accurate information about
our hikes - including our remaining 2010 schedule) at;

"Dave & Bill Hikes" (excluding the Yosemite
and San Francisco “Road Trips”) are
sponsored by Sonoma County Regional
Parks, California
State Parks, and Valley of the Moon Natural History Association.

Dave and I are delighted to announce that the Dave & Bill 10th Anniversary Hike
will be held on May 15. We will duplicate the route that we followed on
our inaugural hike in May 2000. We are planning for a BIG turn-out at
Sugarloaf and hope that you will join us.
Information about our April 24 San Francisco City Hike can be found at www.oaktrail.com/dave&bill/sf01.
The Sonoma County Historical Society is sponsoring its sixth
annual 20-25 mile historical walk from Petaluma
to Tomales, on Saturday,
June 5. It will be led by Jeff Tobes. Information can
be found at: www.SonomaCountyHistory.org. There were 104 people on last
summer’s walk. The purpose of the walk is to increase health through
walking, learn about Petaluma’s and
Tomales’ unique histories, and promote Sonoma County.
I am also leading “Hike & Taste in the
Vineyards” for Kunde Estate Winery & Vineyards in Kenwood.
